IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards: Bringing Clarity to Complexity

Sustainability reporting is becoming increasingly complex, with new frameworks and regulations emerging across multiple jurisdictions. For many companies, keeping up is a challenge.

The IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards (S1 and S2) aim to change that—providing a more consistent, globally aligned approach to reporting.

IFRS S1 sets out a clear framework across governance, strategy, risk and metrics, focused on financially material sustainability issues that impact long-term value. IFRS S2 builds on this with enhanced climate disclosures, including more detailed reporting on risks and emissions across Scope 1, 2 and, where material, Scope 3.

As the successor to TCFD, S2 raises the bar—requiring greater transparency and deeper insight into climate-related impacts and targets.

With countries including the UK, Australia and Canada moving towards IFRS-aligned standards, momentum is building towards a more unified global reporting landscape. Over time, this is expected to improve comparability and reduce fragmentation.

Looking ahead, further standards—covering areas such as biodiversity and human rights—are already on the horizon. Companies that act early will be better positioned to adapt.

Ultimately, IFRS S1 and S2 offer more than compliance. They provide a foundation for clearer, more strategic sustainability reporting—turning complexity into opportunity
